Press statement in response to footage shown on television

Wednesday April 22

On Tuesday 21 April Opsporing Verzocht (a Dutch TV programme that appeals for the public’s help in the solving of crimes) showed CCTV footage of the theft on 30 March of Spring Garden, The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring by Vincent Van Gogh. Singer Laren naturally regards it as of the utmost importance that the police draw attention to the case, and that the painting be returned as soon as possible, but at the same time we realise that the images were shocking.

‘I would therefore like to underline the fact that, in the interests of the investigation, the police elected to broadcast only some of the footage. The footage shown on television covers only some of the events of that night. The burglar broke through a number of doors and several layers of security that had been approved by security experts. The footage released does not therefore allow any conclusions to be drawn as to the quality of security at Singer Laren. As previously stated, our security meets all the requirements stipulated by our insurance company’s security experts. We will of course draw lessons from this incident. At the moment, however, the only thing that matters is that the footage should yield useful tips and that the painting should be returned undamaged to the Groninger Museum as soon as possible.’ Evert van Os, managing director
