Belgian masters

Ensor, Delvaux, Magritte

Belgian Masters offers an overview of Belgian classical modern art, from James Ensor to René Magritte. Impressionism, Symbolism, Luminism, Fauvism, Expressionism and Surrealism are discussed respectively. The exhibition is composed of highlights from the Brussels Museum of Ixelles. The works of art are a reflection of the search for innovation and freedom of expression in Belgium between 1850 and 1950. International influences and local characteristics alternate, as well as a strong focus on visible reality and a preference for fantasy. Our southern neighbors undeniably enjoy the bizarre and the alienation.

With masterpieces by Léon Frédéric, Willy Finch, Georges Lemmen, Emile Claus, James Ensor, Jean Delville, Fernand Khnopff, Léon Spilliaert, Jos Albert, Willem Paerels, Rik Wouters, Gustave De Smet, Frits Van den Berghe, Paul Delvaux and René Magritte.

Museum of Ixelles

The exhibition is a collaboration with the Museum of Ixelles, Brussels. The Museum of Ixelles was founded in 1892, after the extensive art collection of the landscape and animal painter Edmond de Pratere -died in 1888- was entrusted to the municipality of Ixelles. Today, the collection of the Brussels museum offers an overview of Belgian art from around 1870 to the present day.
