LOVE OF COLOUR
GESTEL, SLUIJTERS, DE SMET AND OTHERS
Love of Colour turns the spotlight on a unique private art collection. The main focus of the collection is Dutch and Belgian painters who were working around 1900. Following in the footsteps of the French impressionists, they moved away from visible reality, distorting what they saw, rendering it in different colours, in order to express their feelings. The choices of the collectors are evidence of an excellent eye for these artists’ use of colour, which was revolutionary at the time.
In six thematically arranged galleries, you will be drawn into the world of forty artists, and discover how they saw the world. The works range from intimate domestic scenes, atmospheric townscapes, glowing landscapes and windy beach scenes to the thrills of the world of entertainment. At the same time, these works of art tell the stories from the rapidly changing times in which they were created. Various aspects of modern life around the turn of the 20th century appear, from a growing appreciation of nature to the rise of entertainment venues and mass tourism. Life as we know it today was being shaped back then.
