Belgian Masters presents an overview of Belgian modern art, featuring the collection of the Museum of Ixelles in Brussels, which was established in 1892. The works on show reflect a quest for innovation and freedom of expression in Belgian art between 1850 and 1950. This process was influenced alternately by international and local trends, but always included a strong focus on what was visible in the real world, and a predilection for fantasy. Our southern neighbours clearly enjoyed the bizarre and the alienating.
